The Marriage of Geometry and Gesture Exhibition

ABSTRACT IMAGES OFFER METAPHORS OF EXISTENCE

WHAT:"The Marriage of Geometry and Gesture: The Paintings and Drawings of Owen McHugh 1962-2003"

The work of artist Owen McHugh, according to curator Corey Postiglione, "is an amalgam of two very distinct abstract motifs: geometric planes and painterly passages. Color and atmosphere are also central to his art."

McHugh notes that his "configurations [are] at once solid and infinite [and] may suggest a metaphor of existence. They are meant as images of contemplation."

The selections from McHugh's body of work include works on paper in acrylic paints, chalk and colored pencil and works on canvas in acrylic paint.

This exhibition is the second in the "Surveying Chicago Artists" series curated by Corey Postiglione.

From Puerto Rican Pop Illustration to Macho Identity in Mexican Cinema, Columbia College's FOCO is a Distinctly Offbeat Way to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

Chicago, IL, September 2003--Iconos + Hematomas: Design Culture in Post Latin America, a group art exhibition featuring the works of Puerto Rican Pop Illustrator Carlos Aponte and the Mexican Graphic Design Guerrilla Colectivo Hematoma will kick-off Hispanic Heritage events at Columbia College Chicago on Wednesday, October 1 at 6 p.m. at Columbia's C33 Space Gallery, 33 E. Congress. Admission is free and open to the public. Both Aponte and members of Colectivo Hematoma will attend the opening and reception.

The exhibition and reception is the opening celebration of FOCO (Spanish slang for creativity, literally light bulb), a month-long multi-arts festival (Oct. 1-Nov. 7) that showcases Latin and Latin American contemporary pop culture through visual arts, cinema and music.

"Students, staff, faculty and even some members of Columbia's board of trustees have participated in the planning of FOCO," says Ana Maria Soto, director of Latino Cultural Affairs at Columbia and co-organizer of FOCO. "This is the first time we're doing anything on this scale for Hispanic Heritage Month and it will be one of our major cultural initiatives."

Carlos Aponte's contribution to the exhibition is taken from his award winning satirical book "Icons of the Popular Culture of Puerto Rico and Other Stereotypes" in which he pokes fun at the various stereotypes.

Seventeen of Guadalajara, Mexico's most talented graphic artists make up Colectivo Hematoma. The group's large format posters colorfully depict issues related to Latino and post-Latino identity, war, sex, religion, politics and popular culture. Images of Colectivo Hematoma's work can be viewed at www.hematoma.com.mx.

Subterraneo Niu Wave, a program of Mexican and Argentinian underground cinema and a film series on macho identity and homoeroticism in Mexican cinema and an artists' celebration of Dia de los Muertos will take place during the festival.

"Popular culture has the ability to contest stereotypes and to question our notions of identity," says Carmello Esterrich, professor of Cultural Studies at Columbia and co-organizer of FOCO. "It can also perpetuate these stereotypes and intensify prejudices. What we are trying to do is bring these two sides of Latino and Latin American popular culture together to reveal these contradictions, create a dialogue and come away with some fresh ideas."

FOCO culminates on November 2 with a gala benefit and dinner at Rumba. For further information visit www.focofest.com or call Ana Maria Soto at 312.344.7812

Progress at New University Center of Chicago to be Highlighted at October 2 Press Conference

Chicago, September 2003--On Thursday, October 2 at 1 pm at Turner Construction Company's University Center of Chicago Office, 33 E. Congress, 2nd Floor, the Educational Advancement Fund (EAF) will hold a student press conference in order to update student media from Columbia College Chicago, DePaul University and Roosevelt University on the progress made on the University Center of Chicago project over the summer.

Representatives from U.S. Equities Student Housing, the project's property manager, the EAF and Turner Construction Company will be on hand to answer student questions.

After the press conference students will have an opportunity to view two model rooms complete with furniture.

The three Chicago schools formed a not-for-profit corporation called the Educational Advancement Fund to develop University Center, an 18-story multi-use building, bound by State Street, Congress Parkway, Harrison Street and Holden Court (between State Street and Wabash Avenue).

Upon completion, in the summer of 2004, the $151 million University Center will be the nation's largest joint student residence hall. The center will house 1,680 students and 43 staff, providing much-needed student housing in the South Loop.

The University Center of Chicago will provide a unique student living experience found nowhere else in the country," says Ken McHugh, President of the EAF.

The University Center of Chicago will be a mutually interdependent community for Columbia, DePaul and Roosevelt students of all ages, remarked Bill Vail and Eric Luskin, co-project executives for the University Center. Residents will benefit from their interactions with an expanded peer group and the surrounding urban community and the collective environment will dramatically enhance the educational value of their collegiate experience.

There will be five styles of student suites and apartments. Although students will be billed by academic term on their accounts like other campus housing, the equivalent monthly prices will range from an estimated $703 to $1,108 per month. According to a collaborative agreement among the three schools, students from Columbia and DePaul will each have 40 percent of available beds, while Roosevelt students will occupy 20 percent of bed space.

Housing options will be available for undergraduate, graduate and professional students. Student residences will be located on floors three and above. Each of these floors will be divided into two separate communities. Units on the north side of the building will consist of two/two-student bedrooms, each pair connected to a shared bathroom. The area also will contain study lounges and meeting areas.

On the south side of the building, there will be a combination of two-bedroom/four-student apartments and four-bedroom/four-student apartments. Each of the apartments will include a dining room living room, kitchen and two bathrooms. A quite study room is also located on each floor.

The first floor will offer 31,000 square feet of retail space fronting on State Street. A 30,000 square-foot food service facility will be located on the second floor, which will also contain other student amenities, including lounges, multimedia rooms, game rooms, laundries and conference rooms, music practice rooms, a fitness center, art rooms and staff offices. In addition to student living quarters, the third floor will provide access to a 20,000 square-foot landscaped roof garden.
