Chicago, IL—Aurora resident Tiffany Breyne, a graduating senior at Columbia College Chicago is The Chicago Sun-Times newest columnist. Bryne’s column debuted on April 12 in the newspaper’s Lifestyles section will run every other week on Thursdays.
Bryne is the managing editor and columnist for her college’s award-winning newspaper, The Columbia Chronicle. Her Sun-Times column will focus on the trials and tribulations of college life in the 21st Century.
“Tiffany earned this opportunity through her own hard work and distinctive writing style,” said Journalism Department Chair Nancy Day. “But, like a lot of opportunities in life, it came because she was ready.”
Bryne’s work came to the attention of the editors of The Sun-Times when columnist Neil Steinberg came to guest lecture in a Journalism Department class. On the way back to his office, Steinberg picked up a Columbia Chronicle, read Bryne’s column for the student newspaper and alerted Sun-Times editor Michael Cooke to her talent.
“Tiffany being hired as a columnist by a major Chicago daily newspaper is reflective of the hands-on experiences that students can gain in programs and extracurricular activies such as The Chronicle and other practicum in the Journalism Department,” said associate department chair and The Chronicle faculty advisor, Jim Sulski. “These programs serve as springboards to launch our students into the industry, some of them before they finish their degrees. The programs are worth every penny we invest into them.”
She is a graduate of Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, Illinois. Bryne is a senior concentrating in the magazine program in Columbia’s Journalism. She will receive her degree on Saturday, May 12 during the college’s afternoon commencement ceremonies at Navy Pier.
